Description

This beautiful family-friendly hike leads to Lac des Balmettes, a stunning alpine lake set at over 2,200 metres in a wild mountain environment. A varied loop combining forests, alpine pastures and impressive rocky landscapes.
Starting from the Frumezan forest track, this hike leads to Lac des Balmettes, one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the Vallée des Villards. The trail begins with a steady climb, crossing the Torrent des Croix before winding its way along the left bank of the stream. The route then gradually ascends through a valley overlooked by Grand Jarnalet, in an increasingly open mountain landscape. The trail eventually reaches Lac des Balmettes, nestled at over 2,200 metres above sea level in a striking mineral setting. This peaceful spot is an ideal place to enjoy the scenery and, with a little luck, observe chamois and ibex on the surrounding ridges and peaks. The return journey follows the Combe des Balmettes. After crossing a scree slope marked by cairns, the trail passes beneath Pic de Frumezan before descending through reforested slopes back towards the valley. This varied loop showcases a wide range of alpine environments, from woodland and mountain pastures to the rugged mineral landscapes that characterise the Belledonne massif. More ambitious hikers can extend the route to the Col des Balmettes, where even broader panoramic views await.
