Visit the largest mines in Savoie and discover all the secrets of iron and copper.

Getting there

A mine yesterday A museum today

Le Grand Filon offers an immersive discovery ofmining history through its museum and metallurgical park. The permanent exhibition retraces the discovery of the iron and copper deposits in the Saint-Georges-d’Hurtières mountains through a modern tour combining films, models and mineral collections, accessible to all ages. The visit continues outside with the metallurgical park, where the various stages of transformation from ore to forge are presented through reconstructions, workshops and demonstrations during the season.

A friendly reception area completes the experience, with a shop, as well as the miners’ bistro, a relaxation area offering board games and an open-access library.

At the heart of the mine The Saint-Louis and Sainte-Barbe galleries

Explore the underground galleries and immerse yourself in the world of the miners:

  • The Saint-Louis gallery, accessible to all after an easy walk, offers the chance to explore a real ore-seeking gallery, on your own, in a discovery workshop or in the form of an underground escape game.
  • The more challenging visit to the Sainte-Barbe gallery begins with a hike along the mine path before continuing underground, equipped with a headlamp and accompanied by a guide. Between narrow passages, a labyrinth of galleries, carriages and tools left behind, the route reveals a complex network where the iron and copper lode is still visible.

School and chapel of yesteryear The hamlet

Around the Grand Filon, the miners’ hamlet offers an authentic insight into the daily life of days gone by. The school museum, housed in a reconstructed classroom, and the miners’ chapel bear witness to the social, educational and spiritual life of these communities. The walk is both entertaining and educational, providing a better understanding of the mining past while shedding light on our relationship with natural resources today.
