Montsapey

Montsapey

Montsapey, a mountain village perched at an altitude of 1000 m, is a haven of peace with an abundant variety of mountain flowers. The torrents, waterfalls and lakes at altitude will provide coolness and wellbeing for picnics and moments of relaxation in the mountains. In winter, ski touring is king, as are snowshoeing through unspoilt wilderness.

Getting there

a mountain balcony Mountain village

At the end of the road, a cirque dominated by a dozen peaks ranging from 2,000 to 2,500 metres, in the centre, a south-facing mountain balcony… Welcome to Montsapey… You’ll love the playground!

As part of the Baroque circuit, you can visit the church dedicated to Saint-Barthélémy, which is listed as a historic monument. The Chalet du Tour is a lovely family hike. Located at an altitude of 1400 m, it is currently being restored thanks to its selection by Stéphane Bern. A “Cœur de Village” (heart of the village) trail is a fun way to discover the village’s other attractions (bread oven, chapel and various panoramic views). The Chaudron and Relais du Lac Noir inns offer gastronomic delights and refreshments in an idyllic setting…

Natura 2000 territory In the heart of the Lauzière Massif

The village of Montsapey, in the heart of the Massif de la Lauzière, is a reflection of this mountain: incredibly strong and rich.

This alpine sierra is terribly emblematic, true and pure. This NATURA 2000 territory, a label recognising its preserved richness and authenticity, is home to remarkable natural habitats where animal and plant species must be protected.

Geologically linked to the Belledonne mountain range by its north/south orientation, it includes two peaks:

  • the Grand pic de la Lauzière at 2,829 m
  • the Grand Arc peak at 2,484 m

Bordered to the west by the Arc and to the north and east by the Isère, it is separated from the Vanoise massif by the Col de la Madeleine (1,993 m).

A wild massif to discover!

More than 100km of signposted trails for sports enthusiasts and nature lovers alike, with beautiful panoramic views.

Maurienne heritage Le Chalet du Tour

A former mountain pasture farm, it was used to make and preserve cow’s tome and goat’s cheese. This 120 m2 building is currently the only authentic example of mountain construction in the Maurienne valley.
The interest of this chalet lies in its character, its authenticity and its privileged location for hiking in the Lauzière. It is also located in the Natura 2000 zone, in an area classified as a Beaufort area.

The chalet is accessible via a forest track or signposted footpaths.

A chalet, a story

Built in the 19th century, this mountain chalet was used to make cheese before being abandoned in the 1960s.

[…] (it is) built in a completely traditional style with a breathtaking view over the Maurienne valley.

Chemin du Baroque Church of Saint-Barthélemy

One of the finest examples of the neo-classical style in the Maurienne valley, its altarpiece, columns and angels stand out for their sumptuous gilding and sculptures.

The interest of the building lies in its interior decoration. In 1875, the new building received a sumptuous high altarpiece by the Gilardi brothers: the central canvas depicts the martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew, painted in 1875 by Pier Celestino Gilardi. The wall paintings and side altars complete the unity of the interior work: the trompe-l’oeil painted by the Moretti brothers on the vaults depict lunettes from which cherubs emerge, lancets, faux stucco fillings and the four evangelists enhanced with gold leaf.
