A little history

Situated in the heart of the Villards valley, Saint-Colomban-des-Villards is an ancient mountain village whose history goes back several centuries. Like many Alpine villages, it developed aroundmountain farming, livestock rearing and life on the mountain pastures.

The village is organised into a number of traditional hamlets, with houses built close together, forming small clusters typical of Alpine architecture. This layout reflects the community life that once structured the valley.

Traditions and traditions Between heritage, crafts and agriculture

The heritage of Saint-Colomban-des-Villards can be discovered through thetraditional architecture of the mountain houses, the chapels nestling in the hamlets and the costumes of yesteryear that bear witness to the history and identity of the valley. The Maison du Patrimoine (Heritage Centre) offers a glimpse into the life of yesteryear, recounting local culture and traditions.

Mountainfarming remains an essential activity. Sheep farmers perpetuate pastoral practices, while milk from local producers is processed at the La Chambre dairy cooperative to produce Beaufort cheese, which has won several awards for its exceptional quality.
