Opinel Museum

25 rue Jean Jaurès, 73300 Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne

Description

The Museum welcomes you all year round to discover the history of the famous Savoyard knife. From the old forge to the filmed presentation of today's workshops, you'll learn all about the evolution of knife-making.
In 1890, Joseph Opinel (1872–1960) created the first Opinel knife in the small hamlet of Gevoudaz, near Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. His small pocket knife, stamped with the La Main Couronnée® trademark since 1909, quickly became a success both nationally and internationally. Since the early 20th century, the family-owned business has come a long way! Now manufactured in Chambéry, Opinel knives are sold in more than 70 countries around the world. As you leave the museum, stop by the gift shop where you can have your knives engraved, and enjoy the lounge/bar area with its terrace! Tours end 30 minutes before the museum closes. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Free self-guided tour. Guided tours—reservations recommended (starting at €10): https://www.opinel.com/fr-fr/le-musee/visites-guidees-billetterie Groups of 20 or more are welcome for self-guided or guided tours. OUTSIDE THE MUSEUM: THE OPINEL TRAIL Step back in time on the Opinel Trail, a heritage route you can explore on your own or with our guide, right in the heart of the Opinel’s birthplace! This 16-km route takes you from the Opinel Museum in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Place Opinel in Albiez-le-Vieux. Along the way, informational signs invite you to explore the architectural landmarks and historic sites associated with Opinel. In Gévoudaz, the Opinel family’s original hamlet, a 1.5-km walking trail lets you discover the ruins of the first Opinel workshop, the family home, and the first factory! Minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parents or a responsible adult.
